Mousefolk

This is more of a draft transcribed from my trusty notebook, but I thought it could be interesting for people to take a look at the second race coming to Aran'sha - expect this to change completely

Physical Description

Mousefolk are a diminutive race of humanoids, standing between 130 and 140 centimeters tall. Their skin tones range from bright browns to deep blacks, often bearing subtle mottling that blends seamlessly with the earth. Their eyes, typically dark brown or black, are large and expressive, reflecting a keen intelligence.

Society and Culture

Mousefolk live in close-knit families of 10 to 25 individuals, inhabiting humble abodes carved into sandstone cliffs or dug deep beneath the surface of the arid soil. They are a curious and adventurous people, with a deep-seated desire to explore the world beyond their immediate surroundings. A unique aspect of Mousefolk culture is the tradition of the "Seeker." Each individual, upon reaching adulthood, embarks on a solitary journey to discover new lands, encounter strange creatures, and gather tales to share upon their return. The triumphant return of a Seeker is a time of great celebration within the tribe. While generally peaceful, Mousefolk are not without their cunning. They understand the value of subtlety and avoidance, often relying on camouflage and stealth to navigate the world. Their philosophy, "What you can't see can't hurt you," guides their approach to conflict, though many adventurous individuals are more proactive in their defense.

Relations to other races

Mousefolk tend to be cautious in their interactions with other races, their history marked by periods of isolation and occasional conflict. Their unique language, a rapid-fire series of squeaks and clicks, can be difficult for outsiders to understand, further isolating them from the wider world.

Lifestyle

Mousefolk are renowned for their ingenuity and resourcefulness. They cultivate elaborate underground gardens, capturing sunlight to grow vibrant vegetables in the most inhospitable environments. Gardening is considered a sacred art, passed down through generations. Water-seekers, a highly respected profession, dedicate their lives to the vital task of finding hidden water sources. Their expertise in analyzing the earth and identifying subtle signs of moisture is crucial for the survival of their communities.

Trade and Crafts

Mousefolk are skilled artisans, particularly renowned for their exquisite textiles woven from the fibers of rare cave roots. These intricate fabrics, often adorned with vibrant embroidery, are highly prized among collectors and traders. Their primary exports include rare spices, dried herbs, and the exotic vegetables cultivated in their subterranean gardens. They also trade in small quantities of precious metals, such as copper and silver, discovered during their excavations.
