Spell: An incantation, normally termed as a spell, that is used to trigger a magical effect on people, places or things. May or may not be spoken or sung. - Hunter’s Definition

While we have two different definitions of a spell, both state exactly and clearly what a spell is. Now the term for speaking a spell is known as chanting. A spell is often spoken but it can be sung. They can be rhymed to not.
Spells are not always simple. Complicated spells may have to be spoken although advanced mages or sorcerers did not always have to speak the spells.
The performing of a spell is called casting.
One thing to mention is that spells can have terrible consequences. Some are simple to fix while others are not or have permanent effects that last up to a lifetime.
