History of the Cities

Concept vomit

Thess

Thess is the capitol of Serpentis and was the birthplace of the pact forged between shyr and sefora. Thess means "together" and is the origin of the variant thes meaning "together" or "city." Hence the word thesfehen meaning "city folk."   The capitol city was initially founded by a few families who are well known today, such as the Sheruui. This was the first major collection of individuals. Between the two races, Thess became the pinnacle of technological prowess. During the beginning of Nagis Keb, Thess was largely destroyed and left abandoned for many generations. It wasn't until hetenkaa--when the people resurfaced in earnest and began reclamation of the city--that new life was breathed into Thess.   Today, it is a much beloved relic of the deep past and is a major cultural hub. There are many ancient structures that are carefully tended to as well as architecture that was built several eras ago which is still in use today. Thess has a lot of museums, shrines, and is near the sacred Temple of Sheruui. The season-long festival of Hetenkaa is a spectacular time in Thess. The city sees a huge influx in travelers in early spring to celebrate the annual retreat of the demons, the return of the light, and the intense seasonal winds that bring storms of rain and sand. Serpentians view these storms as a cleansing force to start the year anew. They're also ecologically important to ecosystems and summer harvests. The rains quench the land while the sands and ash from the substellar point fertilize the oceans and soils.   While Hetenkaa is celebrated across the substellar face, it is unanimously agreed that Thess has the largest and most vibrant festival.

Oringul

Oringul is the spaceport city and much like Thess' founding, the city was founded in the area the Ethieans arrived when making first contact. Here they helped Serpentis catch up on technology after the devastating setback from Nagis Keb. Oringul today is a boiling pot of diversity and is a critical intergalactic tradepost. It has the largest racial and cultural diversity of any city on the planet and in Shyrofor.   This megacity which is easily five or six times larger than Thess is a place of opportunity. The city was built along several rivers and against the waterways that make up the planet's ring of seas. Inherently, the city is a major trade post on both intergalactic and global levels. As it expanded, it has become aturally divided by the rivers that it was built around. There are three main regions: the upper, middle, and lower.   The Takeover was marked by the Light Supremacists--self-proclaimed High Seren--taking hold of Oringul and holding the spaceport city hostage. They held it for decades. The High Seren took advantage of the natural divisions of the city to segregate the people by class. Those of high status lived in the upper district and those of the lowest status were sequestered in the lower district at the periphery of the city. This small patchwork of islands and sandbars had an enormous population density, and those not blessed with the power of flight were effectively trapped between the High Seren and the massive waterways too great to swim across. The lower district was left to its own devices and swiftly became a place of tightly packed buildings that housed the greatest population density Serpentis had ever seen. Without any proper protection from the demon-infested winters, the residents were regularly faced with the dangers of attacks which led to seasonal deaths. The spring wind storms often collapsed unsteady structures.   Following the end of the Takeover, most people had left the lower district. Today, it is abandoned. A memento of the past. The people of Oringul consider it taboo to cross into the lower district. It has become a sort of memorial, one that is hits seren more deeply than most. Aside from this, the lower district has many dangers including buildings that could collapse at any moment as well as demons that are trapped amongst the rubble and in the shadows year round. This region of the city is not protected by the UV barriers during the winters.   Local tales suggest that the lower district is home to the crime syndicate and the legendary (and elusive) Broken Sword Tavern.

She'salla and She'kilna

She'salla is the name of the substellar point where the ly'kor live. It's regarded as its own municipality and is made up of various tribes. Not sure if there's an actual string of cities or a single city there yet. If there is a city or something, it'd be built into the walls of the fissures where there isn't geothermal activity.   She'kilna is the name of the antistellar face: the side of the planet that never sees light. Ny'kor live here and aren't spread across multiple tribes, clans, etc. They're all part of one empire ruled by an empress. It's built around heavy geothermal activity which fuels the ecosystems there. Little development done for this place yet.

Shyr Inclusion Initiative

Minor municipalities were the result of an initiative to provide urbanized regions where region-bound shyr could take up residence and socialize with other shyr of neighboring climates. An effort to reverse the hyperadaption. Most families still live in the wilderness but these towns make great sites for young adults to bond with others and get ahold of resources. They're also areas for Greater Quilan to trade and pick up or drop off shipments.   For now, I've only done development on Thess and Oringul. I don't have names for any other cities yet or definitive locations.
