Deadly ambush hunters of the rivers and swamps.
Anatomy & Morphology
Origin of MorphologyWhile they're significantly different than other crocodilians, they still share many of the same features and are easily recognized as such.
AnatomyThey are quadrupeds with long strong bodies and powerful tails. They stand very tall for crocodilians and have spines covering their back, which mimics reeds of grass. They have deep abdomens and large mouths filled with teeth that taper together in the front.
Sexual DimorphismMales grow significantly larger than females.
AbilitiesThey can remain underwater and almost completely still for up to 6 hours.
Genetics and Reproduction
They mate through internal insemination, with females laying eggs after 3 months that gestate for another 3 months before hatching.
Growth Rate & Stages
They reach adolescence at about 5 to 6 years and adulthood at about 10 to 12.
Ecology and Habitats
HabitatsThey are predominantly located in rivers in dense jungles or in swamplands.
EcologyBeing ambush hunters, they often attack the weaker animals that come close by, this subsequently means a subtle increase in healthy animals within the region, since the weak are removed from the breeding cycle.
Dietary Needs and Habits
HuntingThey are ambush hunters and tend to hide in murky swamps or rivers with their quills acting as reeds or grass. Animals who come to feed on the fresh looking grass become victim to the afanc. Some travellers have also fallen prey to the crocodilians since they mistook the grass as signs of sturdy ground over which they can traverse the swamp.
General Social BehaviourThey are primarily solitary creatures, only interacting with each other during mating seasons. Otherwise, they're extremely territorial, often killing other intruding afanc.
Mating RitualCourtship takes the form of long standoffs between potential mates. They face each other in stone like poses appearing lifeless, with the exception of communitive hissing that grows more intense as the ritual continues. It's believed that the standoff is a test of persistence and endurance, some can last for almost 12 hours.
They have long heads, typical or crocodilians. Their mouths are filled with many teeth, which slowly taper and come together at the front of the mouth.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They have an average reptilian intelligence.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Their senses are on par with most reptiles, with increased hearing capabilities.

StatusData Deficient (DD)
EffortsThere are ongoing efforts to study their numbers; however, they are dangerous and being ambush hunters, they're extremely good at hiding, which has made progress slow.
