Chondathan Ethnicity in The Full Guide to Faerûn | World Anvil

Chondathan

Chondathans are slender, tawny-skinned folk with brown hair that ranges from almost blond to almost black. Most are tall and have green or brown eyes, but these traits are hardly universal. Humans of Chondathan descent dominate the central lands of Faerûn, around the Inner Sea. These humans are the main ethnicity in the Dalelands, Cormyr, Chondath, and Sembia.

History

The Chondathan people are descended from the ancient kingdom of Jhaamdath, which once ruled over Vilhon Reach. The kingdom was destroyed by a colossal tidal wave conjured by the elves of Nikerymath. The survivors of this catastrophic event settled the lands north and northeast of the Moonsea. They later migrated west to the valleys near the great forest of Cormanthor, which became known as the Dalelands. Others established roots in the region north of the Dragonmere and would found the kingdom of Cormyr.    In the next few centuries, settlers from the Heartlands would venture northwest and begin to colonize the Savage Frontier. No permanent kingdoms flourished in this region, but many have risen and fallen over the many centuries.

Culture

Because of their widespread distribution across the continent, Chondathan society varies greatly from nation to nation, and even between cities. As a people, they have shared an emphasis on trade, exploration, and freedom. However, the most commonly shared value in Chondathan culture is the focus on garnering wealth, power, and prestige for their own and for their family.    Generally, Chondathans are fiercely competitive and very self-reliant. They see acts of altruism and selflessness as surprising and amusing. Many Chondathans become adventurers due to the lure of potential riches and fame they could gather in the dangerous profession.
