Brisk Nettle

Brisk nettle is a flowering plant common to most temperate regions of the world, and is a close relative to the stinging nettle that is even more widespread.

Sharing the Fields

This particular form of nettle is sometimes hard to tell apart from its cousins in the field, often growing in the same locations and bearing very similar appearances. The best way to tell these nettles apart from the rest is their unusual sway; brisk nettle seems to react to wind and breezes more dramatically than the plants around it, swinging side to side where its neighbors shift gently among one another.

Energizing Sting

The easiest, but least conventional way to tell the difference is to just grab the thing with your hands and see what happens! No, it's not a recommended approach, but it's very effective when you observe the effects on your poor, exposed skin. It simply comes with the risk of ending up with a mess of sores and rashes — but it may leave you feeling energized and ready to take on the day!   In the development of a brisk nettle, the regular stinging mechanism remained, but the toxins morphed into a stimulant of sorts. Instead of having painful, itching reactions, those who come in contact with the brisk nettle are instead left feeling quite awake! This variant of nettle toxin overloads pests in the field, but has been deemed quite useful by denizens of Ayun Sovos, who harvest brisk nettle for all kinds of uses, ranging from teas to potions, and more.

I love this stuff. Favorite part was going to be the detail about how they sway and that being a good way to tell them apart, but then you made me LOL for realz with the next section. Well done!

"Just grab the thing!!" ... "That's terrible advice."   Hahaha I'm glad you enjoyed this one! This was a fun species to create, thinking of little ways to set it apart from other similar plants in the field.

Found your article in my quest for my new year's resolutions. And I like the brisk nettle. I love that they sway dramatically. I picture them moving like one of those blowup-tube-man thingies you see at events. Love that mental image. Wouldn't want to risk touching the wrong one though. Maybe this is too detailed but I wonder: are brisk nettles just stinging nettles but with different nutrients in the ground. Or is it a new species that evolved. Where do they get there 'punch' from? And what role do they play in the ecosystem?

The "dramatic swaying" makes me think of the infamous Anthem trailer where the devs gushed about "dynamic environments" with debris flying around but in live the trees just bob from side to side. I'm also reminded of the needles used in "Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern" where the "modern day" ballad version mentions the dragonriders seek out the plants necessary for the cure, but in the historical event the "cure" was actually just the hollow spines needed to inject the inoculating serum into the bloodstream, since the colonists had forgotten so much basic medical knowledge they were bordering on medieval alchemy.
