Arcane Fortunetellers

Within the Olympian Isles, the profession of fortuneteller is very restricted. Only the oracles of Apollo are allowed by law to practice the art of fortunetelling. Official law books will state that telling the future by any other means other than revelations given by the god Apollo is unreliable and dangerous, and so, illegal. Other, less official, sources may claim that the Church of Apollo lobbied to have any other form of fortunetelling illegal thus giving them a monopoly on such services.
Those that are found to practice fortunetelling by arcane means in the Olympian Isle are subject to lose all money taken by their clients and are subject to heavy jail time. Even someone using arcane means to tell their own fortune are subject to heavy fines and jail time if found out by the authorities. Scrolls and materials that could allow arcane fortune telling are routinely confiscated and destroyed.
Outside of the Olympian Isles there are many arcane fortunetellers that are legal. In the Norselands, many fortunetellers and old wise women use runes to tell peoples fortunes without direct assistance or authority given by the Aesir or other gods. In Mélemardor, The elves regularly explore the extents of magic including that of divination. The Elves also regular use these arcane divinations to guide their government policies and use them to justify some of their morally ambiguous experiments by announcing their eventual outcome in a way that would not compromise the outcome.

Payment & Reimbursement

Arcane fortunetellers are known to charge anywhere from hundreds to thousands of gold to tell the fortune of a client depending on the situation. Some are known to give a reading for valuable favors done instead.
