Slavers (SC'20)

Written by Steve Tremblay

Slavery has a long and complicated history in Theria. From indentured servitude to Mul bred for fighting and hard labor to folks just being grabbed on the road and sold to arena fights or ships crews.   While slavery has never been legal, it's popularity has been waning in recent years with the Nu'val taking hits on all sides.   Many groups of slavers have roamed Ellara and other continents, none compare to the size and scope of the Nu'val. They held sway over several towns on Ellara and supplied slaves for tournaments and work camps for decades.   When the army forming to take down King Carter ran through a town held and run by the Nu'val, the local thug leadership was killed in the resulting fight. When the Nu'val sent more people to avenge them and restore their power, they too were killed by a different group of adventurers.   It is not publicly known who runs the Nu'val or if they communicate or trade with the smaller groups but it seems likely that they at least share information.    In the past three years the Nu'val and slavers in general have been killed whenever they run into those with means to fight back on the road. Many have retreated to Bandit's Rest where they have a large camp and no one has yet managed to break that camp to put them on the run.   With the fall of King Carter in 1263, the rise of a new Onak-al without slave fights in the arena and frequent conflicts with others on the road slavery may as well have been deemed illegal.   Those who would choose snatching others against their will would likely choose a prison sentence if caught than the roadside justice many are receiving in recent days.
