The Ever Scroll

The ultimate document in Lunis is The Ever Scroll. This contains the First Law, which when spoken created Lunis in its entirety--supposedly the perfect, "infinite" civilization. When an unknown and unnamed androgyne from Nothing discovered the scroll in a remote tower near the plain of Voor, he read it for the first time, pouring life from his words so that continent-spanning city appeared in an instant, complete with a strict hierarchy and caste system. His voice made Everything.    Every sentence of The Ever Scroll has been written to "preserve beauty and infinity." The first speaker became a quasi-divine figure known as The Absolute. The physical Ever Scroll is supposedly long enough to wrap the whole planet a dozen times, although even faithful Luniite scholars acknowledge that this is probably a legend. Ultimately the birth of Lunis came at the cost of a rich set of civilizations and cultures before it. Although his intentions were good, The Nameless Androgyne committed an ethnocide on a mass scale. Lunis' infinity and perfection destroyed so many other worlds.   To preserve the nature of Lunis, the Ever Scroll must be continuously read. It is kept by The Tyrant of Justice in a domed building known only as Mercy, where a community of eunuchs ceaselessly read it. When one of these readers falls from exhaustion, another steps forward to continue seamlessly where his brethren left off. In this way, many have died of hunger and thirst.   Lunis' darkest secret is that The Tyrant of Justice, who was also present when the androgyne first discovered the Ever Scroll, has throughout the years added to The Law, to fit his own ends. From the first day of Lunis, The Tyrant of Justice suffered the ever-intensifying curse of jealousy, consumed with the fact that the androgyne read from the scroll before he could.   Through these additions, Lunis has developed into a corrupt, decadent civilization, destined for ruin.
