The Forlorn Woods Geographic Location in The Known World: Over the Edge of Redoute | World Anvil

The Forlorn Woods

The Forlorn Woods stretch from the edge of the town of Kutten's Jetty  the the banks of the Eiseluss River. These woods swallow the branch of the Kaiserzorn Road that is a direct connection from Kutten's Jetty to the cities of Walfeste and Hoffstein . These woods have been a trail of last resort for those who must travel and braved only by those of great need or of foolish disposition. No one knows what lurks inside the Forlorn Woods but of the very few that venture through its dense woods not many make the trip unscathed. Those that do arrive on the other side of the woods find it difficult to speak on horrors that happened beneath the leafy shroud.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED

The road into the Forlorn Woods is one that is overgrown and very difficult to follow as it winds between the hills and creeks that cut through the thick wilderness. Of the survivors that have passed through the wood, they claim to have seen strange animals of a bygone age; animals long thought extinct. Though some of the predatory creatures are a worry, most survivors speak of the Tree Men that came and harassed their groups for the nearly week long journey though that accursed wood. The Tree Men would leave no living trace of their victims except the screams and mangled remains. The empty carts of past troops that have braved the road are strewn throughout the wood and sometimes must be removed from the road in order to pass on up the trail.

THE UNENDING NIGHT

As darkness falls early in the wood, that is when the Tree Men come to take their vengeance upon Man. Some claim them to be dark tree spirits that are angered by the long encroach of civilization upon the forests of the world. Whatever they may be, the darkness seems to be their preferred hunt. Those on the caravans and traveling troops find no rest during the night as they are preyed upon mercilessly throughout the long nights. Those that have passed through have talked about the unending need of fires and light to keep themselves safe.
