Belcher numbness Condition in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Belcher numbness

While most of the giant Beasts from Above rely on their size, speed and strength alone when they hunt, a lot of the smaller ones have various other weapons. Some produce chitin needles they can shoot, some became more adapted at jumping and falling at their target. And then there are ones that produce various toxins. One of the more dangerous ones are the gasses produced by Surface Belchers. Not because it is a deadly poison, but because it can affect a large area while being hard to detect and causes Belcher numbness.

Transmission & Vectors

The gas emitted by Belchers spreads through the air. The only ways to recognize its presence is either through the smell (it has a sickly sweet smell) or sight (although barely visible, it gives everything a slight green tint).

Symptoms

  1. In the first 10-15 seconds, if the person in the affected area leaves it, there will be no symptoms of breathing in the gas.
  2. After a half of a minute, the affected person starts to lose control in their fingers. If the area is left at this point, the affected one will need about a week to fully recover the feeling in their hands.
  3. Fifteen seconds later, the sense of balance and the control of the arms and legs are greatly affected. Recovering from this phase takes two weeks to a month.
  4. After a minute, the affected one loses any ability to move aside from breathing and moving their eyes. Recovery takes 6 months.
  5. If the affected one isn't taken from the area within the 15 minutes, their heart muscle, and any other muscle, become paralyzed. Unless an immediate action to cure them is taken, they will most surely die.

The cure

Up until not long ago, there was no cure for the Belcher numbness. The affected people were either heavily impaired or paralyzed for as long as the gas affected their bodies. In most cases that would mean about half of a year not counting the rehabilitation process needed afterward.
By sheer luck, a few of the scouts managed to witness the fight between the Surface Belcher and another Beast, Gray Roper. And while most other Beasts usually were affected by the gases emitted by Belchers' bodies Roper was not. Additionally, they noticed the large amounts of venom leaking down from its fangs. The Roper won the fight.
Later, it was discovered that the venom produced by Ropers can be made both into the antidote counteracting the Belcher numbness and into the filters for the gas masks which let one enter the area affected by the Belcher's gas without any bigger risk, opening some routes that were inaccessible for a long time.

My favourite detail is that the cure can also be used in filters for gas masks. That must have been a game changer!

Yeah, being able to pass through their territory and even hunt them down so they won't produce more gas opened a lot of shortcuts. And also gave them the ability to use the gas themselves for hunting.
