Meikat's Circlet

Meikat's Circlet is a constellation which can be viewed throughout the northern hemisphere of Annyrion. It is a series of nine stars that form the appearance of a rectangular band, not unlike a headband or crown. Set in the centre of the rectangular shape is one particularly bright star, the 'gem' in the proverbial circlet.   It is particularly important to the Avadian culture, as the Circlet is always found pointing due north from any time of evening at any time of the year, allowing Avadian sailors to carry out a rudimentary form of celestial navigation on longer voyages that require them to veer away from a shoreline. The Avadians believe that the circlet was placed there by Meikat, the goddess of the stars. They believe that when the Avadians first ventured out into the Beyan Archipelago in their rudimentary canoes and boats, they were unable to navigate away from the shores of their islands when the moon disappeared, and those that attempted vanished never to be seen again. To help them, Meikat removed her divine circlet and placed it in the sky, holding it in place in the north so the Avadians would always find their way home. To this end, Meikat is considered a particularly important goddess within the enormous Avadian pantheon, and great efforts are taken by sailors to honour her and present offerings that please her, so that she may continue to smile on the Avadians and guide their ships.   The Circlet also has important to the Ranata Islanders and the sailors of Kjoqvist, both fledgling maritime powers. The Ranata believe the constellation to be the spirits of their ancestors who continue to guide their people. The Kjor assign no spiritual importance to the constellation, simply referring to it as 'the band' and believing it to simply be a useful point of reference.
