Dragon's Gorge

An odd feature

On Meado's home planet there is a peculiar geographical feature known as the Dragon's Gorge. It is a large rent in the earth, which appears to have been excavated by extremely large claws; the large hillock next to it lends credence to this appearance. The gorge descends deep into the earth at a steep angle, before terminating abruptly. It extends for about half a mile, to a depth of almost the same, and is several hunderd metres wide. It's sides are scored with deep rents in the earth and stone, which do indeed look like claw marks. At the bottom most point of the gorge there is a small indent in the earth, it's sides are completely smooth and shaped like a hexagon. it is as if a crystalline object once rested there.
At the beginning of the gorge there is a large hillock, it has grown over with soil and vegetation over the years, but geological tests have shown it to be more of a giant pile of rubble than an actual hill. Although the hill has become overgrown, nothing grows inside the gorge itself, and even few creatures venture inside.

An even odder tale

There is a particular myth handed down through local families and recorded in mythological collections, about the origins of this strange geographical phenomenon. It is this ancient tale that gives the the gorge it's name. It is said that many years ago, before their people had ventured into the stars, a large winged lizard descended upon the planet. it dug the gorge in a matter of moments, extracted a glowing object from the depths and, with a mighty heave ascended into the skies once more.   These days the gorge has become nothing more than a curiosity for historians and travellers. The tale almost forgotten apart from a few scholars and the old families who still call this region home. The expansion into space and discovery of new planets and life-forms made, even such an interesting landmark, lose it's appeal quickly.
