Griyalk Settlement in Sundered Lands | World Anvil

Griyalk (Gree-yahl-kuh)

Griyalk is the main trading outpost of the goblin kingdom known as The Vines, the sprawling scatter of islands in the Wyrm Strait heavily overgrown with jungles.   With the kingdom of the Vines being ruled by a druid, nature and the natural world receive particular emphasis in the realm. The kingdom's main source of trade is the enormous variety of flora and fauna spread across the islands, with much of the plant life of the islands being more than capable of depending itself without humanoid intervention. A particular focus for trade has been the breadth of pharmaceutical plants and products extant within the Vines. A large part of the pharmaceutical trade has been the recreational and consciousness-altering plants and mushrooms that are readily available throughout the Vines, whether carefully farmed or growing wild.   The lands within the Vines present great dangers for the unwary, ranging from predatory animals to aggressive plants. Many plants are carnivorous, with hunting mechanisms ranging from sweet scents which attract prey to fall asleep at the base of the plant - a sleep from which they never wake - to plants which hunt by spitting venomous thorns or lashing with barbed vines, or fields of mushrooms which choke prey with clouds of suffocating spores.   As a result of the hazards of the Vines, the islands were soon declared off-limits to outsiders and a single trade outpost created as the interface with the rest of the world. This was the city of Griyalk. Here, goblin merchants, apothecaries, farmers and brewers could meet with outsider traders to conduct business and sell the products of the Vines while buying what was necessary for the kingdom.   The presence of large quantities of mind-altering substances soon drew another type of purchaser from outside, however, more interested in personal use than trade. Recognising a new source of potential profit, the people of Griyalk soon capitalised on the opportunity. Bars, smoke-dens, restaurants and pleasure-houses swiftly proliferated, and the recreational visitors soon outnumbered the traders.   Despite the chaotic nature of the goblins, however, teams of trustworthy law-enforcement goblins patrol the town to ensure nothing gets out of hand and little permanent damage is done. Nothing is allowed to threaten the kingdom's source of revenue and profitable contact with the outside world.
