Death of the First Emperor

After a long and successful military conquest, the First Emperor of the Sun returned to Tik'al to rest and share the spoils with the people of his capital. He was accompanied by his blood-sworn guard and daughter, the Empress-to-be, as well as the goblin priest family led by his right hand cleric.
The moment the emperor set his sight on the foundations of the ziggurat that he had begun the process of building for, the sun became dark. The day was one of a solar eclipse, and his daughter and his priests took it as a sign that he should be deposed, and so the battle began with one stark phrase.

The sun is dead! So too the emperor!

The emperor and his blood-guards, nowadays called Skindancers, defended his life to their own last breath, putting up a significant struggle against the mob and the members of his own family and entourage turned against him.
In the brief three minutes that the eclipse lasted, the few loyal troops were defeated through sheer numbers, and the Emperor's throat was slit, exactly as the sun began to creep out of the darkness, proving the regicide the right thing to do in the eyes of the people. Though the first emperor had been extremely effective and dearly loved, there was no denying that he caused the sun to go dark, but that his daughter brought it back with his sacrifice. 
All present bowed and pledged themselves to her, and among the first things that was done was the halting of the expansion of the Empire. The new ruler and her advisors saw the failure of her predecessor as proof that the Sun wished them to focus on the inside of their nation first, and thus began the reign of the Second Empress of the Sun.
