Kyrik Quill Item in Rilloria | World Anvil

Kyrik Quill

Once every few months kyriks will shed a keratinous sheath from their tail spike. This sheath, like all part of a kyrik, is inherently magical. When a writing quill is created from a kyrik sheath it becomes a powerful spell ingredient. Great for one or two spells, these quills will make a spell more potent and likely to succeed. While kyriks themselves have little use for the quills they do collect them to trade with the elves, who prize kyrik quills.    Some misunderstandings have occurred since the arrival of humans on Ullia's shores that it's the kyrik tail spike and not the shed sheath that make up these quills. This has resulted in some kyriks being killed or maimed for their tail spikes. The High Elves have done what they can to correct this, but sometimes information gets lost in translation.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Once carved into a quill shape, a kyrik quill functions like any other quill. It holds a small amount of ink and can be used to write out the words or rune involved in spell work.

Manufacturing process

Once the shed sheath is collected, they must be washed and then laid out to dry for a few weeks. Once dry the sheath can be carefully cut and carved to create a typical quill tip. As these quills are only good for one or two spells, the barrel of quill is often carved with runic symbols to increase its effectiveness.
