Lyra's Confession

After the public became aware of Zartriites in 2133, the former pop singer Lyra Mousa posted a social media message outing herself as a siren.
I don't want to keep living a lie. I would rather take whatever hatred or prejudice the world wants to throw at me, than hide who I am any longer.
Her confession went viral and caused a social media storm. Despite declaring that she had given up her music because she had realised she had an unfair advantage in the industry, she was attacked on all sides for having taken up singing as a profession in the first place.   Lyra's admission sparked public and legal debates over the roles of Zartriite species in society. By now zombies already had legal rights, as their existence had been public knowledge since 2066; however, there had not been adequate time before her post to draw up appropriate legislation to help the rest, and the result was chaos. Governments rushed to premature judgements, while many humans took advantage of the lack of watertight legal protection.   The Lyra Mousa case was used in arguments for restrictions on Zartriites' legal rights, and different governments took different positions. Most of the laws had loopholes, and it was not until six decades later that the Inter-Species Equality Act 2197 finally closed them all. It declared that in the interest of fairness in an already competitive industry, sirens seeking a career as a singer were required to identify as such. It led to a whole new market in the music industry.
