Kinini Ethnicity in Orcerta | World Anvil

Kinini

The Kinini are a settlement of Avians who diverged roughly 200 years ago from their original Settlement.
Usually Avian culture values hunting expertise highly, this is where the Kinini differentiate themselves.
They opted for a huntless life, which is reflected in their name: Kinini means "The Huntless" in the hunting language of Avians.

Some settlements see this as a mockery of avian culture, but the founders of the Kinini Settlement chose a name in their hunting language for the exact opposite reason, they wanted to show that they still honour the culture they diverged from and will never forget their roots.

A Different way of living

The main differene between the Kinini and other Avian settlements is, that they gave up hunting and instead opted to take up agriculture and stockbreeding.
They especially excel in the latter one, they are the best in breeding Elif known in Orcerta and are the only ones that managed to breed them in different colours than light grey.
They further differ in the way their settlement works, normally an Avian settlement splits as soon as it reaches 10-15 households (Roughly 40-60 residents)
the Kinini dont invoke such a limit but rather welcome everyone wanting to live and work there, be it avian or not.

A trend or a message?

Normally Avians adorn themselves with trophies of their hunts, be it smaller skulls, teeth or other defining characteristics of their prey, instead the Kinini create necklaces to which they add different coloured feathers of the Elif.
These necklaces are commonly refered as Toru and, depending on the colours used, convey a wide variety of different meanings. While they are used by the Kinini to convey messages ranging from "I'm happy you are alive" to "I'm sorry for your loss" they latched on to other cultures where they are mostly worn because of their beauty.

The fact that the Kinini are the only ones who are able to get a hold of different coloured Elif feathers makes them a highly sought after accessory and many people visit their Settlement just to get an original necklace with an original meaning.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

The Kinini chose a huntless life and are of the opinion that every life has an inherent - high - value as such they are seldomly the aggressors in any Situation.
They still like to fight and as such often resolve their differences with a sparring match, contrary to other avian cultures, these seldomly end with severe injuries and never had casualties yet.
