Tjaim, Luu'u, and Djai

Tjaim

The main moon spirit, Tjaim, is an alien figure with an curious attitude towards spaient beings on Ærð. He is known to take an odd fancy to certain individuals, particularly children, and showers them with blessings. His moods and interests are changeable, waxing and waning with phases of the moon, and though he is a significant figure in many pantheons, his capriciousness and ambivalence towards people mean he does not maintain a stable base of worshipers.

Luu'u

Luu'u is a benevolent deity, appearing most often as an injured child. Her domain is healing of the mind and body, and is the matron deity of physicians.

Djai

Djai is either Luu'u's brother or her shadow, depending on the story, and manifests as a cruel trickster and borderline malevolent deity held responsible for ruining crops and wounding livestock.

Supertitions

A full Djai moon is associated with deception and misfortune and is widely considered to be a bad time for new beginnings. It is also believed that these nights that are particularly dangerous for travelling due to monsters and wandering wraiths. Tjaim and Luu'u are considered to have a moderating effect on Djai's influence, or a protecting influence on honest people.

Foul moon

Approximately three times a year, Djai will be a full moon, while Luu'u and Tjaim are dark. This is believed to be a period when the malevolence and cruelty of Djai causes evil creatures to become more active, and animals become more unpredicatable and more aggressive, making hunting a much riskier endeavour. Many hunter-gatherer cultures have a taboo against hunting dring this period.
The foul moon's effect on animals has led to an association between Djai and luck and chance, and the moon is also associated with gamblers, extremes of fortune and misfortune, and is believed to encourage violent and risk-taking behaviour in sapient beings.
