Education on the planet of Mohn is incredibly important, it is the third highest budgetary cost in The Republic of Lonn. The world is transforming so quickly from an industrial model bent on profits and nothing else 1,500 years ago to a postindustrial agrarian-techno civilization trying to live in harmony with the planet. In that development, all seven republics branched out to colonize the known solar system.
As children, people are told they can do anything, and they must always do their best; and that is not a lie. education is the key to your passion. School begins at age 5 for most species and by age 12 most children are SORTed into 4 separate disciplines they have a tested aptitude for.
At that point they are said to have entered the Civilization of The Republic of Lonn and they receive their first Sumni Ring. A Sumni Ring is a small ring (depending on the size of the species) typically no more than 4 centimeters in diameter, made of a precious metal, and inlaid with a ruby: The color of citizenship and the blood spilt for the republic. When a child enters SORT school, they proudly wear their Sumni ring where their species regularly pierces their body to display it.
The next four years are spent in their SORT senior school, and they fine-tune their talents and skills to their upcoming careers. At the end of their time, these children graduate as full adults in the republic and are awarded a second Sumni ring. Again, the rings are gold and provided by the government. They can be white or yellow gold and are inlaid with a blue, purple, yellow or green gem based on their SORT school color. The STEM-SORT rings are yellow-gold inlaid with a blue gem named fardcsi. Two Sumni rings are what most of the population ever achieves. A third is given to proven and trained leaders. A forth is almost unheard of given only to those who have shown extraordinary talent and ability serving the republic. A firth is unprecedented.
