Lake of Still Waters

The Great Celestial Father flies in the great sky, The Dark Abyssal Mother rules the world under.  Their children, the first generation of dragons to rule the Empire of Fang. Ten generations have passed and their descendant wraps himself around his throne and rules us today.  This is as it always was.   The first generation was blessed with immense wisdom and intelligence.  They mastered their mother's magic and conquered their father's skies.  They worked together in harmonious structure to create the Empire for our future.  But one, Skadashanti, was not as the others.  He was bold and brazen; he worked alone and on ideas the others dismissed as folly.  He strove to not just master's mother's magic, but to twist it about his claws and force it to his will alone.  His sister, Kendastenai, tried to reason with him.  She explained that only together could they harness such power - to try and do it alone was deadly and anathema.  He listened not.
Unfortunately, she was right.  As he lost control of the massive forces of magic he was attempting to bend, the backlash struck him like a mountain.  He strugged to regain control, but realized he was lost.  As he set his mind to enter his mother's realm forever, he felt a tail shove him away - and his sister took the blast in his stead.  He was saved.  She was not.   Skadashanti mourned his sister, and begged his mother to take him, as was right.  Free his sister who had love in her heart, but he was undeserving of her sacrifice.  Mother stated she could not do so, but, she would place a memorial to his beloved Kendastenai in the sky.  And so the constellation of the Sister in the sky, twisting stars in the night.   Skandashanti felt he owed more.  So on the site of his folly, he destroyed all his work and created a great lake.  Deep dark waters, still as glass, sit between the mountain peaks.  A simple stone arch, made with his own claws and not a touch of magic, sits in the middle of the lake.  On the longest night of the year, the lake's still waters perfectly reflect the Sister in the Sky, wrapping itselfe perfectly around the lone stone arch.  It is a night of silence and reverence.  Remembrance of those we lost that made our lives possible.

This tale is told throughout the Fang Empire, and is the site of reverent celebration every year during the winter solstice.

In Art

One of the most beautiful throne rooms in the Imperial City is a recreation of the lake's landscape in full detail - with a different seasonal scene depicted upon each wall.  It is said this throne room is used mainly for family matters and to reward citizens for selfless acts of kindness to others.
