What happens is temporary blindness if the spores of the mushroom enter the eye. Other fungal infections can happen if the spores hit other moist mucous membranes in the body. Can be fatal.  Other Symptoms: The poison of the mushroom is fatal and can seep through the skin. Wearing protective clothing when in the presence of Under mature and glossy mushrooms is suggested. Once the mushroom crusts over the hazard is the spores that can lodge themselves into moist mucous membranes. 
The Poison: If the poison is able to enter into the bloodstream it will quickly attach to red blood cells that do not have oxygen attached to them. The poison will stay with the blood cell and does not leave. If a small amount of the blood cells are affected the patient would see mild signs like fatigue and lack of appetite. If too much of the poison enters the bloodstream it will attach to a large amount of the blood cells in the body effectively making it impossible to feed oxygen to the main organs of the body. This will lead to eventual death and not a pleasant one as the patient is starved for oxygen even though they can breathe.

Description: A mostly Green mushroom in its youth. As the mushroom grows it gains a glossy finish on the top of the mushroom. This glossy finish is a poison that the mushroom emits to keep predators and other animals from eating them. Once they reach full maturity the glossy finish will harden and crust over in a black crusty shell. At this time the spore of the mushroom will leave and the life cycle is started anew. 
What causes the blindness: a fungal infection, More specific the spores of a certain fungus. 
Cure: The mold of a certain type of bacteria will produce a chemical that will eliminate the fungal spores and infection from the eye eventually bringing back the sight of the user.

He was gifted the largest lab in all the kingdom by the royal families so that his studies and work would not be impeded. He was able to make a vast array of cures and advancements in that lab including the cure for the Fungal Spores effecting victims eyes. He Found a particular strain of mold that would combat the fungi when administered directly onto the eye. 
How was the disease dealt with before: Warm rags if the Spores were not washed out or a large amount entered the eye the unfortunate outcome would lead to blindness.
