An organization located on Earth, the United Nations strives for peace, harmony, and prosperity, for all countries. It counts every state bar one among its members, the sole exception being a religious city remaining independent. Its authority is limited to the Sol Planetary System, as the long time needed to reach other systems makes it impossible to exert any form of authority.
The United Nations developed the Starseed Program, aiming for humanity to pioneer other planetary systems. The UN Economic and Social Council, tasked with helping states cooperate economically and socially, spearheaded this development. This shared initiative originated from several large countries all doing their own research, resulting in a wasteful level of redundancy. Rather than remain rivals, all agreed to unify their efforts under the banner of the UN.
Planet Ymir was pioneered as part of the Starseed Program, and its flag represents this by replacing the UN flag's diagram of Earth with a diagram of the Gliese 581 Planetary System. More importantly, the structure of the Starseed Program still shows throughout all of Ymir's society, ranging from Universal Basic Income to the independence of the Science Department.
I love the details of how they chose to make the Starseeds. Seems really perfect if you ignore the totalitarian government created by the martial law :p I'd be interested in learning more about the selection criteria for people getting in the Starseed program if you want to expand later on.
Let's see if we get a prompt that fits the Starseed program. =) Selection criteria involve a few things I can already mention:
- Psychological ones, to make sure the people don't immediately riot against the laws
- Physical ones, to make sure people can handle cryo and an alien planet well
- Diverse selection, in professions, skills, race, country, religion, etc
As for the totalitarian government: The entire design is for that to downscale over time as the settlements become more stable, but when you freshly arrive at a planet and still gotta make sure that everyone is safe, you need a solid structure first. They already downgraded martial law repeatedly, so there's already a civic government in place that has a lot of authority as well, just not as much as some would like. (They're still a surveillance state though...)Too low they build who build beneath the stars - Edward Young
