Reliquaries of the Avatars

Long ago, shortly after Eledra's explusion of her Children from Isesda and the errection of the divine barrier between Isesda and Vædra, the gods crafted for themselves avatars who would embody a portion of their power and will that they might communicate and even partially alter creation even though locked out of it. These avatars, while incredibly powerful and often shaped in an image that the individual diety might prefer, were by their very nature mortal. When an avatar would pass from this world, they were made part of a week-long celebration in honor of the god they had represented in life. At the end of this celebration, the avatar's body would be dismembered and pieces of it would be held inside contianers of precious metals and clear or translucent crystal. These became the relequaries of the avatars and were considered deeply precious to the faithful of the Children. Most households would have within their private shrines a number of relequaries, a practice which originated in Atreus but has long isnce spread across much of the world. Even the impoverished would seek to gain at least one, even it were something as minor as a toe or finger bone of a minor avatar. Some wondered why the gods would allow this as in most circumstances this sort of behavior would be considered horrific and may even result in punishment, if not from the church than from one of the Children. Perhaps it is because the avatars, while mortal like all the other races, were not truly of the All-Mother's creation. Whatever the reason, the Children allow this and indeed seem to welcome it as a source of deeper connection between the gods and their followers. Some even claim that the gods will speak directly through a relequary to a servant, demanding obedience and offering magic.
