Fulcrum

"Fulcrum is the center and the center must hold."   In the beginning, there was only the Perfect War. Demons and devils battling for supremacy in destructive, unending conflict. There was nothing new because nothing that was new could survive the violent tug-of-war between the two sides.   Then the Creator came.   We lack the knowledge of their methods and motivations, the whys and hows; whether because it was lost ages ago or because we never had it. What we do know is that the Creator looked upon the War and imposed their own will on the combatants. They created the Balance between the two sides, the thing that doused the endless flames of the Perfect War. They created Fulcrum: a place of life and beauty, of death and renewal, of wonders and horrors alike, a place of fierce joy and placid sorrow. The center of the Scale, the great Turning Point. Our home.   And then they left.   They did not leave us alone. There are beings left behind to help maintain the Balance: celestials, fey, elementals, dragons. But their exact roles are not clear to us; their motivations often inscrutable other than the very broadest strokes. One thing is clear: the crucial role in maintaining the Balance is intended to be played by mortals. Whether we turn Fulcrum into a paradise or a nightmare is up to us all.   So here we sit, between the stifling law of the Hells and the rending chaos of the Abyss. But the wounds left by the Creation War have not healed. The stars have not forgotten.   And no man can say whether or not the Scale will tip.
