Nonny Pen

A nonny pen is a form of magical scribe which is commonly used in the Twin Cities. Most heavily used by merchants and mages, they are also utilized by anyone who needs to take notes or keep records. Nonny pen spells that sparkle or hum a tune are traditional gifts for expectant mothers, while silent nonny pens that attune to thoughts and write in a decorative script are commonly given as presents by young lovers. Schoolchildren are discouraged from using nonny pens so that they develop good penmanship skills, and homework must be written in the student's hand. Obviously, exceptions are made in the case of disabilities that prevent students from writing themselves. University scholars, on the other hand, use nonny pens constantly as they are considered a tool of the trade among academics.
Although the particulars vary considerably, once the spell is activated, the user can address their nonny pen with regular voice commands such as, "Nonny use the paper from the shelf above my desk". The spell will obviously disregard any other speakers in the vicinity, making them ideal for usage in noisy areas such as busy shops or markets where they are used to write out receipts. Special nonny pens designed for use by merchants are also able to store all that has been written in a day and copy down duplicates of all the records in a ledger later that evening.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The spell itself is composed of three main components: manipulation of small objects such as paper, transcription, and magical ink. These are usually controlled by basic voice commands, though the more expensive nonny pens are connected to their controller by thoughts as well. Once a nonny pen spell has had its seal broken by a user, it is bound permanently to that person and cannot be transferred. Many people have multiple nonny pens for assorted purposes, although some of the new nonny pen spells are able to be configured differently for different tasks and they are rapidly displacing the older single-configuration models.

Significance

Nonny pens are often given as tokens of affection, or as a congratulatory gift for events like graduations or promotions.

Rarity

Ubiquitous in the Twin Cities, although they are fairly common everywhere but Valtarus, with its aversion to all things magical.
