Anne Mary of Oldebrooke Myth in Farsight High School | World Anvil

Anne Mary of Oldebrooke

Welcome, welcome! Gather 'round, the tour of 3 pm will start in only a moment. My name is Jimmy, and I will be your tour guide today.

The Tunnels of Oldebrooke have been uncovered during the 1930's. Ever since its discovery, the government has funded research of the village, its inhabitants, and the purpose of the extensive tunnel system that lies underneath. However, Oldebrooke and its tunnels have puzzled scientists for almost half a century. Questions like: What is the cultural background of the original inhabitants? What was their primary source of income? Did they cremate or bury their dead? - have largely remained unanswered.   As such, lacking any scientific explanations, many minds came up with the answers for themselves.
Now, we stand in the center of what once must have been a quite lively village. The people you see here today however, the tour guides and the merchants, don't live in Oldebrooke. Would anyone like to guess why? Ah, I see that you have been with us before, miss. That is exactly right! Most of us live a few miles east from here, in New Oldebrooke. Rumor has it, that is because no one wants to stay here for very long. But we'll get to the ghost stories later. Carry on!

When the town first caught the interest of bustling city people looking for an outlet, several merchants saw an opportunity in moving to Oldebrooke, selling candy and hot drinks. Even though the business was rumoured to go very well, none of the merchants stayed in the village for longer than two years.   Some settled in the newly built village of New Oldebrooke, which was marketed to hold the rustic and relaxed country experience. Others opted to move as far from the region as they could.
Those original merchants indeed reported nightmares, nightly visitors, and they told tales of specters and fiendish apparitions like you wouldn't believe! I should know, as my grandfather was one of them. Now, you in the back, with your hands in your pockets, I'd be very good today if i were you, or your mother might ask me if you can spend the night in my grandfathers old home, hm?

It is as of yet unclear whether the merchants saw illusions, were suffering from some collective hallicunation, or... saw actual abberations. One apparition they all described to have seen: A beautiful lady, young and truly fair, whose arms were thrice as long as they should have been. One of them even said to have recognised her to be Anne Mary Heron, a friend from their youth who had unfortunately passed away at a young age.   Some say she claws at people from within the tunnels, taking them away never to be seen again. Some say she appears in the mist, pointing travelers to the best way to travel. It is debated whether it is a good or a bad omen to spot her pointing at something, and no one knows if she will point you to what you want or to what you fear.   Most stories agree on one thing, she won't be able to notice you if you stay very still whenever her gaze falls upon you.
Alright folks, I hope you have had a wonderful tour today. We are going to enter the tunnels now, find your buddy and keep an eye on them. Please don't wander off, stay with the group. We wouldn't want Anne Mary to snatch anyone on such a lovely day.
