Vailian Trading Company

The Vailian Trading Company is the first of its kind and boasts a massive success, serving as a steady stream of wealth for Grand Vailia's Merchant Dukes. Despite its name, it is a colonial holding company that is in full charge of Grand Vailia's colonies both on the Vatelles and the Eastern Islands.

Founding

It was founded in 665 , 2 years after the dissolution of the Ramerian Empire in a bid by a coalition of three wealthy merchant families to get the old Ramerian colonies under their influence. Rather than being government administrated, the VTC is a completely independent entity, although it still had to answer to the Ducal Council.
This was permitted because the state coffers were rather dry, resulting in none of the Ramerian Successor States having enough resources to sustain costly colonies. However, there were still a number of very rich families - some of which got even richer through war profiteering - who had a keen interest in expanding their influence and wealth, and through the prospect of colonization, they could found their own pseudo-state which they could lord over.

Development

After three years of its existence, it managed to gobble up most of the old colonial possessions of the fallen empire and even expand further, securing cities on the Vatelles in exchange for their imported, overpriced goods.
Now, the VTC still has to answer to the Ducal Council, yet it has acquired a seat of its own on it, thanks to how influential it has become. As such, it has become almost impossible for the company to be cut down to size, and many Merchant Lords fear that they have grown far too influential already.
