The Prophecy of Ascension

The Prophecy of Ascension was first written down around 120, however, there has been an oral tradition of passing it down reaching back far longer, which is why the exact date of its creation as well as whether the prophecy is still in its original form is unknown.
It tells of a chosen mortal ascending to a star - which is commonly believed to be synonymous with attaining godhood. While many supposed heroes have tried, and some even claimed, to fulfil this prophecy, none of them achieved divinity.

Outline

The prophecy speaks of a great man who dares to stand against the gods and is able to outwit them. They are prophesized to find their ascension in the Far North - the inhospitable reaches of Journey's End - where they must outwit the two massive stone guardians. Once their attention is diverted, the hero must perform a sevenfold knock on the gate that will make the statues crumble and the door swing wide open, welcoming them into the domain of gods.
The prophecy also speaks of a great sacrifice and reckoning. The former has been interpreted in vastly different ways by various scholars, from the need for the hero to take his own life as only souls can pass the threshold to divinity, over personal sacrifices, to the deaths of thousands. The reckoning, on the other hand, is commonly agreed upon to be adversary sent by the gods to stand in his way, although it is not known what form they would take.
