The Red Arms

The Red Arms, named for their chosen color of armoring (red), are the latest in a long line of prince guard established in Agaland. They are assigned to protect and serve the young prince James Steelheart, though they seem to have adopted him more into the folds as a member rather than their charge. Unlike previous iterations of the prince guard, there is only one career soldier among them, hand chosen by Hadrick Steelheart as a means to keep tabs on the group. The guard is composed of decorated individuals from many walks of life.

History

The Red Arms was formed much later than other prince guard, due to health concerns with the young prince. Up until he was seven, the King and Queens guard were assigned the task of keeping him safe. The oldest member, both by establishment and age, was once part of the kings guard and the most trusted by Hadrick. As the prince grew older, more members were added. A medic was chosen first, and from there other members were added, selected for their achievements and skill outside of the military.
Eventually, the responsibility for the prince's combat training shifted to the Red Arms from the king. The boy started off as a brutal fighter, but was quickly broken of the habit thanks to the captain's hard work. As the prince grew older, the responsibilities of the guard did not change. They were to guard and train the boy, but rather than keeping him in line with the expectations of the castle, they encouraged behaviours that may be seen as unsightly to the public, such as sneaking out, bare back riding, playing pranks, gambling, and against the wishes of his parents and their medic, the Red Arms enabled his participation in The First Drink rite of passage.
