The Constabulary of the Realm

"Man what I wouldn't give to be in the city. Enforcing the law in a tiny village is soooo boring..." - Sheriff
While there is no central law enforcement organization of the realm, many of the small villages have their own Constabulary system promoted by the guard of the realm. This serves to ease the burden placed on the Realm's Guard.

Structure

Each village's constabulary consists of 1-5 members, the Chief, sheriffs, and apprentices. The chief is responsible for the village's law enforcement as a whole, sending in paperwork, reports, etc to the relevant people each month as well as issuing warrants, approving permits, and approving apprentices.   Sheriffs are responsible for law enforcement within the villages. They kill time by helping their neighbors, but generally resolve conflicts and keep the peace. They are capable of deputizing civilians when needed to hunt fugitives and may be recruited by the Guard of the Realm for larger cases or into the guard's ranks. They are responsible for training apprentices.   Apprentices are the bottom of the pecking order. They are responsible for care of the mounts and the 'dirty jobs' no one else would really want to do. They are paired with a Sheriff and shadow them during patrols and jobs.

Assets

Each village has it's own building to host the Sheriffs, which includes an office for the chief, a large holding cell, several smaller cells, stockades, two horses (plus one for every sheriff or apprentice hired), and a small armory. They are paid by the taxes of the village.

History

A centralized law enforcement method was developed and deployed to the many villages of Agaland sometime during the reign of King Helvor Ardeth II. The idea behind this method was to allow villages to handle their own issues without the involvement of outsiders, who he felt were not suitable to bring justice upon their neighbors. This freed the Realm Guard up to handle the larger issues, such as serial killers, defectors, bandits, etc.
