Volognomes

The Volognomes are the largest group of gnomes known on Dungar. An interesting fact is that to be a Volognome all you have to be is a citizen. Once you are a citizen of Lockgear or any of the Tower Cities you are always one and therefore a Volognome. The great city of Lockgear is the original home to the Volognomes. Most of the citizens are gnomes there are also many fully sentient Machine Men among them. There are a few rare occurrences where the Chamberlains of Lockgear have allowed different species to become citizens.
The two largest influences of power among the group are Wealth and Family Name. If you have the money or the proper name you are considered part of the prestige class. The higher the prestige a family holds the higher the floor their ancestral home is.

Art & Architecture

The Volognomes idea of art and beauty revolve around gears and items moving on their own. Volo Clocks are some of the most extravagant and fanciful items in all the realms. Many rich and powerful kings and aristocrats in Draqua have had clocks commissioned for them by the gnomes.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

The birth of a new gnome is significant to the parents, the family, and their society. Even Volognomes that have left the Tower Cities in pursuit of greater fame, fortune, or prestige. If they or their partner become pregnant, no matter how far away, they will start their journey home so that the child may be properly introduced to Gnome Society. After the child is born, if the parents want to leave again, they will leave their infant with their family to be raised till they return.
It is not always possible on the day of a gnomeling's birth due to mitigating factors. Due to this, the family's elder will perform the Palkil at their earliest convenience.

Common Taboos

The only true taboo in this society is to turn your back on family. Even if this is not the most logical or even proper thing to do. If a family member comes to another, it is up to them to assist them in any way they can. Disobeying this cannon can get one's citizenship removed and banished from the city of Lockgear.

Ideals

Gender Ideals

The idea of separate but equal has no higher rank than with these gnomes. When a Volognome marries, they will take the most beneficial family name no matter what the branch. If their life partner is not of original decent, they will go through the rites to become a citizen of Lockgear then take their new spouses family name. When it comes to day-to-day activities, both sexes share jobs and chores on the ability of the individual, not their sex.

Courtship Ideals

They only will marry once in their life, so they want to be sure, so they have long engagements of 40 to 50 years of cohabitation to verify compatibility. Even if a child is born, they will be given the family name that is the most beneficial from their parents like usual, and the child is still a full part of the family even if they find they are incompatible and choose not to wed. During the courtship, the couple will live together just like they were married.

Relationship Ideals

Volognomes are very family-oriented and very monogamous. They all believe that there is a perfect fit out there for them. However, sometimes you can find a really close fit. The problem becomes that just because you can fudge it doesn't mean you won't damage yourself or the others.
