The Moonlight Gala Tradition / Ritual in D&D | World Anvil

The Moonlight Gala

The Moonlight Gala is held annually in Haven during under the full Mystic Moon. The event is hosted by the Dragon Lords Calladon and Vamyrastraza in the House of the Triumvirate. A special, much more grandiose gala is held once every eight years in recognition of the eight (original) schools of magic.

Proceedings

The Gala begins at sunset and sees the Dragon Lords enter with their most prominent poets, warriors and scholars of their respective Hoards. Throughout the evening guests bestow gifts unto the Dragon Lords and commonly receive a gift in return. Common gifts to the dragons include fine magics, jewelry, written epics and one's own fealty.   Though not an official part of the Gala, the Dragons' subjects often spend the evening attempting to convert servants of the opposing Dragonlord, often through bribery or friendly negotiation.   Once every eight years both dragons make a show of offering a sizeable portion of the magic from their hoard to the goddess Seraphine. The gifts are lain upon an altar and dissolved to fine silver ash beneath the violet light of the Mystic Moon. Owing to the sibling rivalry of the two dragons, the quality of magic offered is a point of pride among both dragons who compete for the greater offering.

Controversy

With the advent of Chronomancy (the ninth school of magic), many wizarding sects push for the sacrifical rituals to be performed once every nine years. The dragons, resistant to change, have maintained the eight-year tradition.

History

Originally created by the wizards of Haven prior to the rise of the silver Dragonlords, the Gala's purpose was to show reverence to Serapine. In these early years, wizards would gather a collection of their fine works and cast them into a pool of magic to be disintegrated annually. When the Dragonlords assumed control of Haven, they decreed this a wasteful expenditure of potent magic and altered the proceedings.
