Whale Oil

Whale oil is oil obtained from the blubber of whales, typically used in the Kingdom of Falcrest, the Confederation of Fieren, and the Kingdom of Ameo for oil lamps.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Whale oil has a low viscosity (less than olive oil). Depending on the method of processing and the species of whale from which it is harvested, the composition of the oil can vary. "Toothy" whales provide an oil with more wax content, while baleen whales contain higher fat contents and were the ideal targets.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Whale oil burns with the introduction of a flame, giving off a fishy-smelling, black smoke and bright light. As a result, most whale oil lamps contain filters at the top of the glass.

Compounds

Whale oil can also be used as an industrial-grade lubricant. Toothy whale oil, because of its higher wax content, is desired for this purpose.

Geology & Geography

Baleen whales harvested for whale oil are typically found in the waters between Omath and Orela, while the toothy whales harvested for waxy oil are found in the colder waters off the northwestern coast of the Confederation of Fieren, north of Kingdom of Heron and west of Kingdom of Nortvin. 
Whalers speculate that more whales can be found east of Omath, but none of the whaling fleets have ventured far enough to locate any sizable (profitable) hunting grounds.
