The Lost Egg

Once upon a time, dearest beloved, the great drakkuns Jorrath and Sbrithnir laid a clutch. Two eggs stayed with Sbrithnir and hatched into the venerable drakkun we know and love for they grew up at Sbrithnir's talon and learnt the ways of drakkun and drakiss. The other eggs went with Jorrath but Jorrath died soon after in battle.

Fearing the fate of unled drakiss, Jorrath's Crew too service with the family of the humans who had defeated their Lord. When drakkun fight, such things are common and few are the occasions where humans have laid low a drakkun in their prime - so we should not think ill of their decision. And they kept the eggs and followed the The generally accepted approach to looking after unmatched drakkun eggs. but the eggs were not happy.

A drakiss who spends much time with an egg may come to comprehend the thoughts of the shell bound drakkun and so it came to pass two generations later that Fivunisel comprehended one of the eggs to be unhappy in a community of drakiss more interested in humans than drakkin; the other egg was silent. Now Fivunisel and some of their friends believed that the purpose of the drakkis is to serve the drakkun so one day, six conspiritors stole away with the unhappy egg and left their crew.

They followed a river making for the northern hills where the town builders had not settled but fell into conflict over where to settle. Some say that the egg spoke differently to each of them; others that it trusted not its guardians. Who can tell - but their raft was upset, five drakiss drowned and the sixth knew not what had become of the egg - only that it had been lost to the river.

The egg was washed down stream and out to sea and some time later hatched into a drakkun unlike any other; a drakkun that watches over the drakkin - separate to our society but watchful and protective of it. When trouble or discord strike at the drakkin you may find peace or resolution from an unexpected stranger. Do not be surprised for this is the nameless drakkun.

Historical Basis

That the egg was lost is well established, contemporary records survive in the archives of both the Dukes and the drakiss. These document the taking of the egg by a group of Eggheads who fell to infighting with only Fivunisel surviving to pass on the tidings. But of the truth behind these few known facts? Some, notably among the eggheads, see the legend as the literal truth; others see it as an allegory for the politics of the time and some as a piece of entertainment.

Spread

The legend has spread to the other rakiss crews of Tarusia - in the crews of Kamgrimmur and Hrafkell, who came from the same clutch as the lost egg a variation is common which has the egg hatch and the drakkun roaming the world as an unseen force protecting the interests of the drakkin. To other crews it speaks of the perils of the world for a group of drakiss without a drakkun as well as the irresponsibility of Jorrath and their crew. The version told above is that told in Hrafkell's Crew.
