Day of Reflection

On Avaria, long life is never guaranteed. The peoples celebrate the passing of each year as they know they may not have another. Nowhere is this idea more vehemently believed than among the Human and Drakkar civilisations, who's comparatively short natural lifespan forces urgency among them.   In the The Valgardian Empire and Thylea individuals mark the passing of another year with a Day of Reflection. This is typically a private ceremony where the person will take stock of the last year and search for the lessons and wisdom that they can take forward into the new year.   Some families and communities also mark an increase in age with shared storytelling, recounting their past glories and triumphs and a meal in their honour.   Those who share birthdays will sometimes meet to trade wisdom and stories among each other, strengthening their communities.

History

The tradition originated with the Tortles of the Traveler's Isle. Who's love of stories and reflection was passed on through the generations. When the humans of Dolgar encountered and allied with the Tortles they too adopted the practice as a way of increasing their own wisdom. The Day of Reflection soon passed though the human kingdoms and became a mainstay of their culture.

The Day of Reflection is highly personal. Most observe it in private. Some throw balls and feasts to recount their wisdom for their guests and yet others commit their deeds to writings or songs.
