Tyran Pteropun Ethnicity in Astraeus Zephyrus | World Anvil

Tyran Pteropun

Since long before hte Great Calamity, the Pteropun have ruled the eastern side of the continent. Their homeland, once a lush forest is now a barren desert, but the Pteropun have adapted. Held together by strong colony bonds, the Pteropun have lived through famine and draught. Eventually their patience paid off as the land regrew and colonies began tending to the fresh oasis.  Marriage is not a concept the Pteropun acknowledge. Relationships are often brief and any offspring are raised more by the colony than the parents after the first few months. Intermingled relations, including same gender, are frequent within the colonies with very few relationships existing as deep friendships rather than romantic partners.  The Pteropun are the only type of Baq'naut that do not use echolocation, relying instead on eyesight alone. Unlike their Desmodon and Vampyrum cousins, they are also completely vegetarion, mostly existing on a diet of fruit with a small variety of vegetables.  Work is divided equally, without regard to gender. The only exception is nursing mothers as the care of an infant is considered work in its own right. Only after a pup is capable of feeding itself is the mother expected to return to work at which time, care of the pup is considered the responsibility of the entire colony. Once a pup is can began working with the colony they are given small tasks often found tedious by the adults, but seen as no less important for the success of the colony such as collecting morning dew which supplies most of colony's daily water supply.   Colony histry is handed down by way of songs that are carefully recorded and continually extended to include more recent events as time moves on. Each year on the anniversary of the Celestial Calamity the colony will gather and spend the day singing the songs of their ancestors. Smaller, more frequent concernts, are performed for young as they become old enough to learn the songs for themselves.
