Gate Mages

While many would consider it a privilege to be able to use magic, most overlook the intense strain undergone by the more powerful Space Mages who use their abilities to transport necessities such as food and water to the more remote regions. While many use Space Gates as a form of transportation, either for goods or for travel, few appreciate the sacrifice of the mages who hold the position, and connect the various Gates to each other. More often than not, they are ignored and put to the wayside, only truly appreciated by each other and those who had done it before.  On top of this, many of those who take the job on are unable to leave, because the amount of people able to replace them are far too few, and most nations will not allow one to leave if they accept the position, should they even have a choice. Most who leave and those who have overworked their magic and left themselves crippled, and rather than thanked or given benefits, more often than not they are used as scapegoats for whatever mistake or tragedy their injury may have caused with a sudden closure of the gate.  When all is said and done, the work of a Gate Mage is tireless and grueling work, allowing little in the way of variation or rest, though some nations institute some benefits for the Mages. Overall, they are overlooked, overworked, and undermanned.  Moreover, the risks that come from using their magic in such a way, aside from how the gates that are used to amplify the travel can fail, many times the Mages themselves can strain their magic, hurt their own physical bodies from backlash if their partner suddenly falters, or even destroy their Magic Coils, if their feedback is harsh enough.
