Dragaeyn's Whispering Knife Myth in Animus Extortus | World Anvil

Dragaeyn's Whispering Knife

Ancient even a thousand years ago, this knife was a remnant of the terrible power that accompanied the times before history.
The last Dragaeyn Emperor, Wilhelm XVII, possessed a special knife that he used to conduct his human sacrifices, believed to be the Whispering Knife from the Era of Legends.

Summary

During his time in self-imposed isolation, Emperor Wilhelm XVII arranged for the Whispering Knife to be "acquired" for his personal study. The Whispering Knife had a hunger for human blood, and it's whispers of craving drew the young Emperor quite mad. It was with this knife he conducted the ritualised murder of countless citizens of his Empire. It whispered to its victims, entrancing them, forcing them to mindlessly accept their impending deaths.   The Knife's whispers grew louder and louder with each kill, until people nearby could start to hear them. The crazed whispers combined with the knife's distinctive appearance, a dark, metallic black blade with a gleaming transparent green edge, made the blade recognisable for what it was. It was the use of this blade that eventually caused the Spiritmeld.   The Whispering Knife still resides in the twisted otherworld where the Dragaeyn Imperial Palace once stood. Adventurers who attempt to locate and claim it as their own never return.

Historical Basis

The Whispering Knife was a real blade, believed to have originated somewhere in the distant past of the Era of Legends. It's edge was sharper than anything known at the time, able to cut through maille with ease, and could apparently "whisper" to its holder. It was owned by the Patricians of the Ignei island of Montevecchia until it was stolen in 48 Era of Man. Starring in 49 Era of Man, records of a blade of identical description in the personal possession of Emperor Wilhelm XVII began appearing in Dragaeyn.
