Star-sick Monolay

Star-sick is sometimes used to refer to any Monolay who doesn't conform to societal expectations, but is most commonly used for any who wish for or take the decidedly unusual step of leaving the planet. Interestingly, despite Blank Monolay making up the majority of the general population and stone elementals being most common among Elemental Monolay, the demographics of Star-sick are very equally distributed, making groups of Monolay off-planet the most diverse samples you can find.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Star-sick will retain their original family names, though it isn't uncommon for them to search out an equivalent in the local culture and use that instead.

Other names

As is custom for any Monolay that leaves Elemin, they take on 'star names' instead of using their true individual names. These names will often differ to reflect the local culture as they moved between planets, but it is also fairly common to pick a new identity and stick to it. Human and Vant names are the most common, as those are the closest in appearance to Monolay. There is no rule to picking a new name; many will simply choose one that sounds good to them, while others research to try and find one that has a meaning they appreciate.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

All speak Monolaic but it is very common for them to not only pick up trade language like Simone but to also learn a local language of the species they spend most time with.

Major organizations

Like many other species, Monolay will prefer the familiarity of their own over other peoples, and this holds true even of those that wish to leave their home. Where you find one Monolay, there will often be others. However, they don't form official factions of their own, instead joining ones they agree with wherever they end up. It's fairly common to find groups of them living a nomadic lifestyle, enjoying exploring and sending their findings back to Elemin.

Relation with Homeworld

Star-sick are not pariahs; they are welcome home whenever they wish. However, they are generally considered odd and unreliable by many Monolay, and those that spend their time in some kind of military or fighting position are looked down upon. It is seen as a waste and potentially corruptive, with some worlds being seen as particularly disruptive influences on elementals.   Those that do leave to other planets are well looked after by a portion of the council which translates best to ‘extra-planetary affairs’. After all, if citizens are curious and adventurous then they might as well be sent to other planets instead of waiting to cause trouble, and send semi-regular reports and images back for the scientists and those interested to pore over. It was fulfilling a need of the person while using their ability for the advancement of the people- a miracle, in their eyes.   Some few, who are less inclined to leave their families or to abandon their duties to their people, are employed directly. They fulfill roles as off-world diplomats, traders and deliverers, allowing them to leave and return frequently. These are the ones considered most highly by general Monolay society.
