Last goodbye Tradition / Ritual in Age of Gray | World Anvil

Last goodbye

During the Age of War death could come without a warning. In the middle of the night, during work, while traveling from one city to another. People knew that they could lose someone they knew at any moment. But even in those times of desensitization letting someone go was hard. For those who think they are ready, a ritual with a simple name of Last goodbye has been created.

Things needed

The ritual can be performed in almost any House of Monochrome. In those in which it can be, there is a small nave. Inside of it stands a short pillar, with a fire burning at its top. The flames tend to change their color over time, with each ritual performed. To start, one needs to bring the item that once belonged to the person they want to finally let go of. It doesn't have to have any sentimental value and it can even be a small fragment of said item. It only needed to be in the possession of the one passed away.
The second thing, although it isn't needed for those who already know how ritual needs to be performed, is the presence of one of the priests of the Six Monochromes. Their role is to explain the process, help with directing the feelings, and releasing them.

Execution

The first step of the ritual is both the easiest and the hardest one. It is to accept that the one we loved is gone. Most of the people go through this step by deciding to go through the ritual, but others still need someone who'll help them finalize their decision.
The second step is to burn the chosen item in colorful flames. The flame itself burns on substances that react to Colors of people and react to any changes of them, so adding anything with its own Color signature releases them. The flames change the Color while creating a smoke of contrasting colors. This smoke is a signature of everything that was related to the person lost.
Watching the smoke rise and disperse in the air is the last step of letting go.

"You are brave, very brave to finally move on. It doesn't mean that you won't remember them. A painful memory a feeling of loss might come to you once in a while, but you're here because you won't let it control your life anymore."   "As you watch the smoke rise and disperse, remember that those you love came back to their purest form. That of pure Colors. And they became one with them, being everywhere around us. Their blessings, warmness, and kindness will always be with you."
