Hellview Syndrom

Do you hear the voices too? Do you see the faces grin? Do you see the shadows dance?
— Hellview Syndrome Victim
Medicine is supposed to help people. Either to heal their ailments, dim their pain or ease their final walk. But sometimes it doesn't help in the way it is intended to. Humans vary a great deal and what is a saving grace for one may spell doom for the other. Mocrain, a slightly green liquid won from the crushed nuts of the Brightwood Tree, is normally used to cure or lessen the symptoms of a total nervous breakdown and bring the patient into a state of relaxed bliss.   About one in ten-thousand patients is not so lucky, however. They will suffer from what is widely known as Hellview Syndrom. What exactly the victims see is unknown, as not a single affected has been able to give a clear description. Outwardly they will appear normal, glassy eyes the only thing signifying that something isn't right. Victims will nearly immediately begin to scream, mumble or whisper seemingly incoherent things. Many hours of testing and research have managed to determine that these ramblings are about creatures and voices that appear to torment the afflicted. A hellish landscape is spoken about and has given the condition its name. Victims will switch between the incoherent delusions and lethargic, almost death-like states and simply waste away as they won't accept food or water.
All we can do at this point is to end their suffering. Its a shame that these events have to happen, but Mocrain is the best agent against hysteria and nervous breakdowns.

So I'm wondering if the apparitions are real on some level or simply the product of the human imagination and a dose of fear.

That's terrifying. Those poor people.
