The Amber Siren Myth in A Quiet Realm - Prostesa | World Anvil

The Amber Siren

"If I had a piece'a copper for every time I heard about some naked lady abductin' travelers, I'd be richer than a Garvinan noble."
- Ba'Bé, Zenian sage
Prostesa is no stranger to folklore. Even the most innocuous of locations have stories tied to them. Whether to teach, warn, or entertain, each legend evokes a concoction of emotions. In modern times, most legends have been written down, but the older the myth, the more apt it is to retell it by word of mouth. The Amber Siren of Lake Amber is one such legend, often passed around Stolian families in an effort to teach children the importance of not wandering into the forest alone.

Summary

Not far from Port Brigges and Stoldrain is Lake Amber, an ordinary lake with an unsettling history of sudden disappearances. Those that linger in the forest at night may be lulled to sleep by the songs of a woman's voice—a sleep one never wakes from as they are dragged to the bottom of Lake Amber.    It is believed that the hauntingly beautiful songs of Stoldrain's forest come from a siren living in Lake Amber. Though no matter the investigations or rumors, there have never been any confirmed sightings of the Amber Siren.

Historical Basis

Stoldrain rarely experiences supernatural events despite living under Caspio’s moon, yet those that do occur are remembered for generations. Stoldrain’s first public scare occurred just after Arthur Thornsberry returned from a camping trip in Stolian Forest dazed and pale. Scars covered his body—particularly his face—just barely avoiding his eyes.   The confusion only grew when Arthur informed onlookers that his wounds were self-inflicted. They were a desperate attempt to break free of the madness of a supposed monster’s song. It was by pure chance that Arthur lived to see another day, and the man has remained afraid of the forest ever since.   Raven Thornsberry (currently Swellowfall), a native to Stoldrain, helped her father on his road to recovery. To this day, she tells foreigners and children the dangers of the Stolian Forest. Though it may be tranquil during the daytime, night only invites trouble.
