The Tower / The Exclusion Zone
The Exclusion Zone is a desert-like area that has been wiped clean of any life with the use of a magical blast. In the center of this area, there is a tower, or a temple called the Temple of Pholeimos.
The temple was built 200 years ago when Zorolai re-appeared on Toril at the end of the Spellplague. It's a temple dedicated to the elven Goddess Pholeimos, a goddess of pain, suffering, and empathy.
Geography
The Exclusion Zone is located within the mountainous forests of the Zorolai wilds. Within the area itself is a desert, devoid completely of all life. All plants within the Exclusion Zone are blackened husks of what they were before. In the epicenter of the Exclusion Zone is the Temple of Pholeimos.
Localized Phenomena
Sandstorms and lightning are frequent in this area, though strangely enough the border of the Exclusion Zone is typically where the storms die out.
History
Discovery: 1st of Hammer, 1598
The tower was once a church several hundred years ago when Zorolai was in the middle of a war. The inhabitants of the church worshiped someone called “Pholeimos”. This church harbored elven refugees fleeing from someone known as “Lord Streggyk” or “The Winged Emperor”. The Priestess attempted to summon their goddess into their realm using a spell provided by a demon disguised as the goddess herself. This spell violently trapped the goddess within an amber statue. However, this particular goddess had remained isolated from all others for a reason - her essence radiated an "Aura of Pain" that manifested in the mundane realm in the form of a blast that created the Exclusion Zone. The Aura lingered, effectively cursing all sentient beings within the area to slowly degenerate into husks of the people they once were. The majority of those affected committed suicide as the pain was too much to bear. The others were slowly transformed into ghoulish creatures of pain and suffering. This affliction had kept them alive for centuries until outsiders arrived.
A group of adventurers located the temple and confronted the priestess - High Priestess Lara Liumatel, the founder of the church. After a vicious battle with the woman, she was killed. The party destroyed the altar in the chancel, freeing the trapped elven goddess. She left back to her own plane of existence and with her, took the aura of pain she carried with her. With the aura of pain gone, the curse surrounding the tower was lifted, and any ghouls that were spared reverted back to their original forms.
