N' Kaedin Ashin Nahblis

N' Kaedin Ashin Nahblis (a.k.a. Holy Man Nahblis)

N' Kaedin Ashin Nahblis

Ashin Nahblis, later given the honorific of N’ Kaedin, is a Child of Neer Chag from Artrella, who in the Late Consortium period, became a religious leader and activist on behalf of his fellow Children of Neer Chag throughout Artrella who were struggling in indentured servitude.

How Did this Happen?

Adherents to Neer Chag (the Holy One of Comfort) are gifted with divine magic power to sooth the pain of others in either physical or mental in nature, depending on the individual. A fourth of Children (Adherents) of Neer Chag are able to soothe both the physical and mental pain of others. Sadly this made them appealing to attach to households of the elite, especially in the Late Consortium, but also for the first fifteen years of the Republic.   Zaygel has a robust non-magical system of surgery and internal medicine, due to scarcity of those gifted with magical healing powers. Sadly the management of pain is difficult despite the efforts of so many in internal medicine. This led to a great desire for the magic of the Children of Neer Chag. Belonging to a highly benevolent Holy One, his Adherents were above and beyond willing to provide this succor. Sadly there were certain needs and traditions of the Order that made them vulnerable to exploitation.   Indentured Servitude had been a very common occurrence in the Late Consortium, especially among the poor and indebted of Artrellian society. Being Adherents to a Holy One, would usually protect from debt and poverty, however Children of Neer Chag were much more susceptible to these conditions due to their need for access to insert drug name and the itinerant tradition of their Order. Long ago the Children of Neer Chag made the collective decision to travel to ease the suffering of others wherever they be, moving from city, to town, to village instead of having Temples.   A consequence of this being it was hard for the Government to extend funds to them (or at least the governments were happy to use the lack of Temples as a loophole to giving funds), a lack of leadership among the Order also meant there wasn't a specific person who could be called on to collect and disburse funds in the name of the Order. Many Children of Neer Chag needing to support their bodies in use of their powers, and to satisfy the addictive nature of insert drug name, became indebted to elites who had the funds to purchase the [drug name], or to apothecaries who then often sold their debt to elites for large sums of money. Among the Chief Mercantile Noble Families of the Consortium Children of Neer Chag indebted to them was seen as a must have, and sadly this started a trend among the rest of Artrella’s elite families.

Physical Description

Special abilities

N' Kaedin Nahblis is what's called doubly gifted. This means he has that rare ability to soothe both physical and mental pain.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Ashin's mother and father were both Children of Neer Chag. He was raised in their itinerant lifestyle and has been to every region of Artrella and likely even further afield. Ashin has never identified his parents for their protection and privacy. Other Children in the Order were like an extended family for him. Like his fellows he made many friends among the citizens of Artrella, due to the nature of pain he would sometimes stay in an area for weeks at a time helping people as they recovered. The need for this practice also added to the convenience and desirability of Children of Neer Chag as indentured servants as Ashin sadly learned later.   N’ Kaedin Ashin began his work as leader among the Children of Neer Chag when he was 35 years old. He observed that he was finding fewer and fewer fellow Children of Neer Chag on his travels. While working among the courts of the Chief Mercantile Noble Families he found at least one and sometimes up to half a dozen Children attached in indebted servitude to each household. Soon after he realized that this was a fad among the elites and that Neer Chag’s Children were being snatched up by families and apothecaries, for their own personal use, and even worse for clout or profit to people outside the households. Deeply troubled Nahblis started his protests to help his fellow Adherents.

Education

Nahblis learned to read and write from his parents, and learned many other things from his fellow Children and through his travels. Much of his education was based on experiences. He can also speak several languages, although his writing is limited to his native Standard SouthWestern.

Accomplishments & Achievements

His great accomplishment and why he is recorded in the history of Artrella, and actually in consideration for Sainthood, was for his invention and initiation of a form of peaceful protest he called Gathering. In his travels, and especially as word of his plans got out, other Children of Neer Chag would travel with him in a group, this group could grow to a flock. This flock would then come to a household of an elite family, or apothecaries that held debt contracts, and settle in for long meditation sessions in the area of the household or shop, often for days or weeks if need be. The people of the settlement would soon learn that a group of Neer Chag’s Children had gathered and they would seek them out for soothing, leading to an even greater number of people in the area. If a family or business owner tried to call out the Urban Cohort to remove the protesters it would not work as Urban Cohorts members are forbidden by law to interfere in the work of Adherents unless their actions are violent or dangerous. During the sit in protest Ashin would personally meet with the family or business owner to dissolve the Child’s contract.   Another great achievement was Nahblis's broadsheets that he hand made along with volunteers and gave out in every forum in each Artrellan city. This got the attention of the citizenry, which in turn got him an audience with the Senate leading to his great speech. The speech so moved the Senate that within six months the indentured servitude of any Adherent was abolished, and radically altered the practice of indentured servitude. Stating that in order for an indentured service contract to be lawful the person to be indentured had to initiate the contract for themselves, and it could not last longer than five years.

Failures & Embarrassments

During his time of protests and broadsheets, a short time before his audience with the Senate, Ashin Nablish was apprehended by the Enforcement of Republic Security (EoRS) the secret cohort answering to the Consuls. It is not known when in particular Nahblis was apprehended. It is rumored he was betrayed to EoRS by a follower, it's further rumored that the follower was Ashin's lover. However, there is no evidence for this.

Mental Trauma

At least Nahblis was held and questioned by EoRS, for how long is uncertain, but it was likely several months as he seemed to vanish from public view. It is unknown if he was interrogated or even tortured while in EoRS custody, however EoRS has a whispered reputation for believing that any sort of dissenter is privy to dangerous knowledge that must be uprooted from them. Nahblis refused to speak of this incident.

Morality & Philosophy

Peace, Soothing Pain, Pacifism, Meditation, Peaceful Protest, Protection of the Exploited, Itinerant Holy Man,

Social

Contacts & Relations

In the spirit of cooperation and long term friendship some Adherents of Arcaros the Saint of Wounded Soldiers also joined the protests. These Adherents were sworn to defensive tactics only to protect the Child separating from the family or business, or to protect protests from harm.

Religious Views

In imitation and adoration of their Holy One the Children of Neer Chag as strictly pacifistic (with a few cultural exceptions). Nahblis knew acts of protest would have to be conducted very carefully to avoid violence or riots, which he dreaded.   Neer Chag’s holy commandments also decreed that any who were in pain and consented to soothing would receive care, so Nahblis was also in a bind that he couldn’t encourage the indebted to refuse to soothe, nor could he refuse to do so himself.
