Gravity Magic

As the sun rose over the port city, I arrived at the dock ready to start my first day as a cargo handler. I watched in awe as the elderly sailor named Marcus, effortlessly loaded the small cargo ship with boxes of vegetables and fruits.   "How are you doing that?" I asked, mesmerized by the way the boxes seemed to float through the air towards the ship.   "It's all about the connection lad," Marcus replied with a wink. "Just let your mind go but don't let it drift too far or you'll end up like ole' Jimmy." Marcus said with a haunted look in his eye.   I tried to mimic his movements, but every time I lifted a box, it would spin out of control. Marcus chuckled and offered a few words of advice.   "You have to clear your mind and focus on the task at hand," he said. "Gravity magic is all about control. just like steering a ship - if you don't have a firm grip, you'll end up going in circles."   I took a deep breath and tried again, and this time, the box lifted smoothly into the air and landed gently on the ship.   "That's it boy!," Marcus said with a gleeful grin. "You're a natural at this!"   Thanks to Marcus's guidance, I was able to complete the loading of the ship with a few minor complications, and as it set sail for its destination, I was giddy for the next ship that might dock.
Gravity magic is a powerful type of magic giving users the ability to control and manipulate gravity and gravitational pulls. There are many practical uses for Gravity magic, you can use it to lift heavy objects that might otherwise be impossible, it can be used to stop or change the path of objects in motion, you might even use it to change gravity in a large area to affect how creatures interact with the environment.   It is hypothesized that gravity and time magic have a close connection. More research is needed but when used in tandem there have been some wild results. Some even believe it foolish to continue experimenting due to the unexplainable phenomena that occur when the two have been mixed.

Manifestation

There are many ways that Gravity magic manifests in the world. Some examples follow:

  • Objects can be made to float or levitate through the use of gravity magic. This could be used for transportation or to move heavy objects.
  • The gravitational pull of an object or person could be increased or decreased, allowing them to jump higher or fall more slowly.
  • The gravity of a specific area can be altered, allowing people to walk on walls or ceilings as if they were the ground.
  • Gravity magic can be used to create anti-gravitational fields that protect the user from external forces, such as falling debris or attacks from enemies.

Localization

Gravity magic is most prevalent in biomes with high levels of gravitational forces, such as mountainous regions. Some examples below:
Mountainous regions: The strong gravitational pull of large masses such as mountains may create areas with a higher concentration of gravity magic.
Near celestial bodies: The gravitational forces exerted by celestial bodies such as planets or moons may also create areas with a higher concentration of gravity magic, this can also extend to those who worship celestial bodies.
Underwater: The dense water in the oceans or other bodies of water may create an environment conducive to the manifestation of gravity magic.
In the air: Areas that are open to a lot of wind or have a higher elevation can have stronger gravity magic.
Space: Creatures and objects from space may have strong gravity magic as space is full of areas with strong and weak gravitational pull.

I love the little story you added in the beginning. It makes the magic feel more alive! I really like that you also added the logistical aspect of the magic. Most people would describe its uses for combat. But imagine the possibilities for transport and construction! A castle could be built in such a short time, without the need to hoist all those rocks up and down!   What other uses do you think gravity magic could have on society and your world? It sounds really interesting!

As you mentioned, building stuff would be a lot easier with gravity magic. The information in the article is of course a short list in a very wide area of magic. I think it will be fun to flesh it out (and leave some a mystery). I do think the most interesting possibility is when some crazy wizard decides to mix time and gravity magic in a serious way. I bet gravity magic would be very useful in entertainment and in battle.   I appreciate the question, it helps me think about it myself! I'll have a continuation for each magic type in the future and of course some common spells/more knowledge.

Yus! I'd love to see more! Keep doing what you are doing! :)

This sounds like a very useful type of magic, and it's always fun to think of all the ways it might change things for the people living around it. Awesome stuff :D   What's the largest object you could affect, either all at once or through long-term effort? Or can you make the magic stick around for a longer time?

I would say it would depend on the amount of magic in the area, the strength of the caster, and the power of the spell. If we max it all, it's a bit terrifying to think about. For example, I will have deities in my worlds. One specifically for Gravity that lords over all gravity. Given that measuring stick I would say the entirety of gravity encompassing my world. If we're talking a species on my planet, I could see it getting out of hand with powerful local magic and a strong caster. Maybe I'll have to explore something like this in a story. Let's say your average strong caster, 2-8 tons would be my guess. Somewhere between a small to an enormous elephant. The magic can stick, however, it would take specific spells and a skilled caster. Wow, what a question, this wasn't easy to answer.

Those are the fun ones to think about! How many average casters like that would there be in a general kingdom/city/nation? :D

Hmmm wow gravity magic seems to be super rare, maybe 20. I could have swore it used to be more.

You've got me thinking about power creep in my world. I'll probably have to do something to deal with that sooner rather than later.

I'm glad to have spurred some thought! :D
