Shellstone is a form of highly compressed limestone which is always cool to the touch, even after laying in the sun all day. It is known that the rock was once a coral reef.

Shellstone is used for buildings such as temples, villas and libraries. The stone is cut into thin slabs for dressing rather than actual supporting construction.
Geology & Geography
The Shattered Isles to the west of Zami Ramal are the only source of shellstone. The quarries cover two entire isles and the quality is constant even deep into the bedrock.
History & Usage
History
The native people of the Shattered Isles used this stone to build cairns and cool storage to protect food and stores from the heat. After the landing, the stone became known for its cooling properties throughout the lands.
Discovery
The explorers and scholars who first mapped Zami Ramal discovered the Islanders using the rough hewn stone and made the original contracts for it's export and trade.
Refinement
Shellstone is crafted by skilled masons into useable slabs for building. In its found state, the stone is formed into vast cliffs and it must be carefully extracted to avoid sulying the pure whiteness.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
The process of extracting and smoothing shellstone produces a lot of dust and powder, which is always fine and pure white. This can be used to fill small cloth bags which can cool the skin and pad saddles for comfort in the heat.
Environmental Impact
The great demand for shellstone is slowly removing the heart of the Shattered Isles bedrock. The resource is by no means infinite and the quarries are vast, creating great scars in the isles.

The people of The Shattered Isles, who are crafty and hard-working, sell the shellstone to traders who provide transport from the island ports to Kurata, from where it is distributed across Zami Ramal.

The best way to store shellstone slabs is on raised wooden pallets that allow air to flow, letting the stone dust blow from the dressed surfaces.
