Kurata, Centre of Industry

Town - Kurata - western port - connections to the Scattered Isles out in the Sunset Sea.

Demographics

The city is mostly composed of humans and dwarven people, with a small proportion of elves and dragonborn. There are quite a large proportion of merchants, guildsmen, artisan and shop keepers but most of the population are workers in factories and warehouses.

Government

The Port Guard are the main lawkeepers in Kurata, and the town is overseen by the Governor, elected by the merchants every 10 years.

Defences

A wall was constructed to encircle the city 1250 years ago and has been maintained as the main defence ever since. There are three gates leading out from the walls. The port is also walled and the harbours are well-defended, though nowadays there's very little that threatens from the sea.

Industry & Trade

Cheif among the imports from the Shattered Isles is the much-prized shellstone, taken from the island quarries. There are also spices and animal pelts from there in small amounts. Exported to the Isles is grain, beer, fruits, leather and wool. Industries in Kurata focus on stone and metal works from building blocks to cloak pins and everything between.

Infrastructure

From the first settlement of the town as a mining colony, the main buildings have been mines, refineries, metal works and other factories. Worker homes are crammed around the outside of the city walls and the wealthier business people live in villas within the walls. The main focus of activity is the port which transports stone and other goods from the Shattered Isles, 10 miles out into the Sunset Sea.

Guilds and Factions

There are three main artisan guilds: The Metal Workers, The Stonesmen and the Tanners.
The only recognised faction is the Port Guard, though there is a hidden faction of thieves and black market dealers who work around the port.

History

Kurata was settled before the time of the Landing, being a small fishing village with no great industry or connection to the Shattered Isles. After the Landing, many people ventured west from the eastern lands and found the Sunset Coast and a few small villages there. Kurata grew after further travel was made out to sea and the islands and their indigenous people discovered. Over the last 800 years, Kurata has grown exponentially, helped by trade with all of Zami Ramal and it's renown as a source of quality goods.

Architecture

Almost all of Kuratan city buldings are of stone, quarried from the southern mountains and traded for shellstone and metal goods. Factories and common homes are usually of brick with wooden roofing. The villas of the wealthy are constructed of sandstone dressed with shellstone. Originally a wooden stockade, when trees became scarce, the walls were built of heavy sandstone and granite. Roads are cobbled and sometimes paved in the city centre, becoming packed earth further out from the gates.
