The Djinn Vessels Myth in Zagdesh | World Anvil

The Djinn Vessels

"I've lost good friends in the desert, looking for those accursed items. Fools hoping to trick a Djinn into granting their every desire, why would they let the desert give such items to anyone?" - Xertz Archeologist discussing the Vessels

Summary

Hidden in the desert, there is the tomb of an ancient warlock, who bound his Djinn master to his bidding, as well as other Djinn. He did so with the creation of special metal items that he altered to contain the power of the Djinn, and allow him to channel them. The legends say that when he died, the Djinn he had enslaved were freed, and they, incapable of destroying the items, hid them away in the harsh desert sands, so that no other Djinn would suffer the shackles they had.
It is also believed that there is wealth there, more than a kingdom could spend in a year. It is for this reason, as well as the promise of power the Vessels offer, that people search for these items.

Historical Basis

This myth is widely believed to be mostly fictitious, however there are a few key points where it lines up with historical events of the time, which fuels the crowd of treasure hunters who search for them.

Spread

This myth is widely known throughout Xertz, and any who travel to or through it.

Variations & Mutation

There are variations of the myth, while some say that the vessels were prisons, others say that they are actually conduits that allow the Djinn to more comfortably manifest on the material plane. There are other variations as well, but these two are the most widely spread.
