The Needy Magpie

The Magpie is the most popular inn in the harbour district of the Seat. Sailors spending a day or two in the city always make their first stop here, before heading off to their "ladyfriends" or other places like the Shaggy Bed for their more carnal desires. A large pub with room for roughly fifty people if you believe the official numbers, it often finds itself overcrowded and has its guest spilling out on the street, much to the delight of the harlots and pickpockets who don't have access to the pub proper.   To still keep things somewhat civil, the bar keepers are usually former fighters who know their way around a tavern brawl, and the innkeeper has some influence with the harbourmasters when it comes to privileges. For that reason, a lot of captains drill it into their crew to not pick trouble at the Magpie - there's more than enough places to do so around the harbour district.

Purpose / Function

The Magpie provides sailors with food, drink, entertainment and, if needed, a place to sleep. It is most certainly not the fanciest of establishments, but it is a well-run inn with clean rooms and decent food, and you can count on entertainers being there at night. Duff does his best to keep the more unsavoury types out, so it is definitely not the place to find a woman for the night, but if you have the money to pay for a single-bed room, no one will bat an eye if you bring company for the night.

Alterations

The building is still mostly half-timbered, but the waterside has been fortified and expanded slightly to allow for more landing boats to dock at once. Other than that, little has been altered, although the building is kept in good shape and rotten wood or otherwise damaged parts have been diligently repaired or replaced when necessary.

Architecture

A standard half-timbered architecture that widens with every floor to allow more space to be used. Towards the waterside, where no other houses come close, the upper floors have little oriel windows, sometimes even oriel towers with a second floor, usually widening a little on the roof and containing a small study with a desk and bookshelves.

History

The Magpie is the oldest inn of the seat and was founded in the days when it was still Stoneport. It had a very capricious past, at times being a brothel in disguise, other times a den of thieves with a righteous facade. Still, with the latest change in ownership it has become known as a well-run, honest establishment with good service and as little shady things happening as you could possibly have in an inn frequented by sailors where lots of ale is consumed.
